NORBERT THOMAS
FRANKFURT 1947, lives and works in Essen

Just in time for the start of the season, and to celebrate the 70th birthday of the artist, the neighboring galleries Jörg Schuhmacher and Monika Hermann-Simsch will showcase a retrospective of Norbert Thomas.

As a representative of the Concrete Art, the native Frankfurter has been working with the controlled coincidence since the end of the 1960s. The starting point of his work is always the pure white canvas, which he illustrates with an even line raster. For this purpose, Thomas uses randomly selected cards, which are labeled with numbers from one to 360. They determine not only the angular dimension and width of the lines, but also the color in the intermediate grid, which serves as a distinguishing feature throughout his work.

In the retrospective, relief paintings and sculptures are also exposed in the galleries, in which the rational base also appears as a basic form.

The exhibition shows the infinite possibilities of Thomas' stringent concept, which playfully combines rules with chance. The non-representational structure, the system and the concept of chance are consistently depicted through his work – however, the more recent the work is, the realization becomes softer and lighter and the paint application more important.

Nobert Thomas’s work is represented in numerous private and public collections. The artist lives and works in the city of Essen and lectures on the experimental composition at the Bergischen Universität Wuppertal.

ROLF HANS. MAQUETTES 1969-75

24 MARCH - 29 APRIL 2017

OPENING HOURS:
TUESDAY - FRIDAY 12 - 6 PM
AND BY APPOINTMENT
The exhibition ROLF HANS – MAQUETTES 1969–75 presents a selection of so-called maquettes – small-scale designs for large-scale paintings. They are made on wooden panels of varying format. Our show features many different maquettes and one later executed large-scale painting. Hans engages with the optical effect the colours have on one another as he juxtaposes homogeneous colour zones of similar shades, staggering them to form step-like shapes in countless variations. The artist’s diversity, manifest in these small works, is striking.

OPENING HOURS:

The exhibition features works on paper by ROLF HANS executed from 1976 onward. In this period of his career, the artist reduced not only the surface but also the palette of his works. From the series of monochromes we will show exclusively works in BLACK ON WHITE. Like Pierre Soulages and Richard Serra, the Frankfurt artist found the beauty of poetry in monochromy.
