PICASSO LITHOGRAPHIES BY FERNAND MOURLOT, P. 137, N° 162 A.

The artist Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. In its magnitude, but also its wealth of expressive forms, his printmaking œuvre is one of the twentieth century’s most impressive. His works in this medium are distinguished by a fascinating combination of different printing techniques and the pleasure the artist took in experimentation. Within this context, portraits of women are a recurring motif. The work on view here likewise depicts a woman. Shown as a half-length figure, she gazes at the viewer frontally. The asymmetrical eyes – one stands out more and is significantly larger than the other – and the coarse rendering of the female contours heighten this forcefully expressive lithograph’s level of abstraction. This fascinating study of a woman is framed with rays in such a way as to remind the viewer of African cave paintings. Despite its crude appearance, it has been composed with the utmost wealth of detail and conveys a sense of the mystical and primeval. Its large two-dimensional areas endow this lithograph with a painting-like aesthetic. It is a work that bears unique testimony to Picasso’s printmaking activities of the years 1948/49.
